About ‘Own World’

Rose Rutledge's music is a genre-bending exploration of sound, blending elements of lofi ambient, electro pop, and alternative indie with her formal training in jazz and classical genres. Her one-woman flute choir creates lush, layered "flutescapes" that provide the perfect backdrop for her vocal productions and live looping performances.

With 'Own World,' Rose showcases her talent as a composer, vocalist, and flutist, and cements her place as an exciting new voice in modern music.  Like all her compositions ,this piece features her signature flutescape, creating a hauntingly beautiful dreamlike atmosphere that perfectly captures the song's introspective mood. Her vocals are raw and emotive, weaving through intricate flute lines with ease and converging in a playfully sassy call and response.

'Own World'  is more than just a beautiful piece of music, it's a reflection of the challenges we face in our modern world. In this song, Rose explores the frustration of trying to be fully present in a world filled with modern-day distractions. ‘From our phones to computer screens, it can be difficult to disconnect and appreciate the beauty of the moment. Meanwhile, life ticks along, and small moments pass us by.’ says Rutledge on the inspiration for this composition.

With Own World, Rose hopes to offer a poignant reminder to step outside our own world and embrace the present moment.

"Faced with a banquet of modern-day distractions, I feel like I haven't managed to get my nose out of my phone, computer, or my head out of a never-ending stream of consciousness. I wrote 'Own World' as a reminder to step outside myself more often."

Own World Q+A

Where and how did the band come together:

Rose Rutledge, originally from Seattle,  is a Brooklyn-based producer, singer-songwriter, and rogue flutist. For years, Rose has played in bands across NYC appearing on both flute and saxophones. She now turns her multi-instrumental talents into a one-woman sound story. At the heart of Rose's sound are her lush and layered "flutescapes," created using her one-woman flute choir. These flutescapes provide the perfect backdrop for her vocal productions and live looping performances.

What are the band’s main influences?

Rose’s works have the bones of her professional classical and jazz training, but deviate into lofi pop, experimental, ambient and electronic influences. One friend has described the vibe as “It’s like if J Dilla produced a Bjork song and sampled Steve Reich”

Have you played any notable gigs, festivals or other events? Likewise radio or TV appearances?

Rose appears regularly with collaborators in Brooklyn, most frequently with A Bunch of Dead People. She's performed across various venues in the past including Lincoln Center, Broadway and numerous jazz clubs.

Any upcoming gigs?

Rose Rutledge will appear live at Kobrick Coffee in NYC on May 18th  presented in a showcase produced by Breaking Sound.

Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or any particular music styles or events that inspired it?

In 'Own World,'  Rutledge explores the frustration of trying to be fully present in a world filled with modern-day distractions. Born from her own frustration in glazing past small moments of beauty and connection, ‘Own World’ serves as a reminder and a playfully angry chastisement for being too preoccupied to notice life passing by.
